RIMS ERM Conference 2021: IRS Receives Global Enterprise Risk Management Award of Distinction

On Friday, RIMS President Ellen Dunkin presented the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) with the 2021 Global Enterprise Risk Management Award of Distinction at the Society’s ERM Conference in New York City. The honor recognized the IRS’s outstanding achievements that allow it to anticipate emerging risks and establish the appropriate culture, processes and structures to strengthen strategic decision-making. 

Navigating the impacts of an extended government shutdown, sweeping tax reforms, operational disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic and providing essential financial relief to thousands of businesses and individuals across the United States, the IRS ERM program helped the agency to remain resilient and effectively manage a multitude of dynamic challenges.

“Through the ERM program’s focus on embedding risk management capabilities into the existing structures and operations, the agency has become more risk aware,” said Jeffrey Tribiano, the IRS’s deputy commissioner for operations support. “There is also greater collaboration across the enterprise to address significant risks that require efforts from multiple business units. By effectively highlighting the enterprise-wide effects of risks, and by capturing risks on the enterprise risk profile, ERM has helped garner agency-wide attention and support for measures to help address the risks. Since IRS established its ERM program in 2014, it has played a critical role in helping the agency to better understand and respond to risk, thus making the organization more resilient and better able to serve the American people.” 

This year, RIMS honored three other organizations for their exceptional accomplishments developing, implementing and maturing ERM within their organizations. Honorees included:

  • 2021 RIMS Global ERM Award of Distinction Honorable Mention: Dallas Fort Worth International Airport
  • 2021 RIMS ERM Award of Distinction–U.S. Honoree: Eversource Energy
  • 2021 RIMS ERM Award of Distinction–International Honoree: EuroChem

“Enterprise risk management continues to deliver exceptional value to organizations, allowing them to successfully address emerging risks while also identifying and leveraging opportunities that might not have otherwise been apparent,” Dunkin said. “Risk professionals get better—and deliver better results—by learning from each other. We are so grateful to the IRS and all of honorees for sharing their ERM journeys with the RIMS community and doing their part to advance this rewarding profession.” 

Judging criteria for the Global ERM Award of Distinction include measurable, tangible and sustainable results; unique program strengths; ERM innovation that links risk with strategy or performance; and the program’s ability to build sustaining risk management capabilities. The panel comprises members of RIMS Strategic and Enterprise Risk Management Council.

RIMS ERM Conference 2021 was held November 11-12 in New York City and virtually. The program themed “ERM in an ESG World” focused on the growing risks stemming from environmental, social and governance challenges.

Intuit Wins 2015 ERM Award of Distinction

CHICAGO—In recognition of its success in building a sustainable enterprise risk management (ERM) program to enable its business lines to identify and intelligently manage the most important risks, software company Intuit was presented with the 2015 Enterprise Risk Management Award of Distinction at this year’s RIMS ERM Conference.

“ERM transformed Intuit’s risk management capability requiring our leaders to think cross-organizationally and cross-functionally to understand the most significant risks and drive strategies to address them,” said Janet Nasburg, chief risk officer at Intuit.

“ERM was instrumental in not only providing insights about the company but has also driven changes in the way we align our focus. It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by RIMS for our hard work and to share our ERM experiences with the risk management community.”

Honorable mention for this year’s ERM Award of Distinction went to VIA Rail Canada Inc., the country’s national passenger rail company.

As a result of its ERM program, the company developed a risk appetite and tolerance framework based on measurable leading key risk indicators.

“Applying this framework to its key strategic risks strengthened VIA’s ability to assess, monitor, and respond timely to changes in its enterprise-wide risk portfolio, thereby adding value to its decision-making process and enhancing risk oversight by its board of directors” said Denis Lavoie, VIA’s director of enterprise risk management.

“RIMS is delighted to recognize the accomplishments of these two organizations and their risk professionals through the RIMS Award of Distinction,” said RIMS Executive Director Mary Roth. “The Intuit and VIA Rail programs demonstrate the tangible value that ERM brings to their respective organizations for both strategy-setting and strategy execution.

RIMS Honors the Best in ERM

MIAMI – Enterprise risk management (ERM) continues to gain momentum in boardrooms around the world as it is increasingly being considered an essential element of an organization’s strategic planning process.

In recognition of one organization’s efforts to successfully align its ERM program with its strategic objectives, thereby enhancing its resiliency and operational efficiencies, RIMS presented the 2014 ERM Award of Distinction to Malaysian-based Astro Overseas Limited at the RIMS ERM Conference in Miami.

The award was presented by Lori Seidenberg, senior vice president of insurance and risk management at Hunt Companies and member of the RIMS board of directors and was accepted by Ghislain Giroux Dufort, president of Baldwin Risk Strategies, on behalf of Astro Overseas Limited (above). It recognizes Astro for successfully implementing and sustaining an ERM program across multiple investments in a diverse mix of businesses in the media and broadcasting industries.

The program is an extension and evolution of the group enterprise risk management program implemented at Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad, which is Astro Overseas Limited’s sister company, and the main source of operations for television and radio broadcasting activity. The program not only allowed the organization to better manage its IT and cyberrisk vulnerabilities, but prompted its board of directors  to include enterprise-wide risk assessments and related investment and risk performance dashboards as part of the organization’s strategic decision-making process.

“It started as a process to address operational risks but our leadership quickly realized the value our ERM program can add to achieving strategic objectives,” said Patrick Adam K. Abdullah, vice president of ERM at Astro Overseas Limited. “It’s our hope that sharing the success of our ERM program will inspire others to advance their own risk programs and highlight the impact such a program can have on an organization’s ability to navigate exposures and leverage new opportunities. It is a tremendous honor to be recognized with this prestigious award.”

Honorable mention for this year’s ERM Award of Distinction went to Schaumburg Ill.-based American Agricultural Insurance Company and was accepted by Lorie Graham, the company’s senior underwriting and corporate risk manager (below).

As a result of its ERM program, the company was able to reduce uncertainties caused by severe weather by reassessing corporate goals, developing a diversified income base and grow surplus.

“Whether it is global expansion, the use of new technologies or even outdated operational practices, ERM continues to prove to be an effective risk management approach that propels organizations, regardless of industry, to reach and exceed expectations,” said Carol Fox, RIMS director of strategic and enterprise risk practice. “The judging panel for the ERM Award of Distinction was impressed with the complexity and quality of all of the submissions and congratulates Astro Overseas Limited for winning this top honor.”
